10 Coolest Boats in Movies

Thu 21st Mar 2013

Like yourselves I'm sure, we love boats. We scour the web for cool boats that we dream of buying one day. We also like to kick back and watch a movie of an evening when we get a chance. So, we've put together a list of some of our favourite boats from films.

I'm sure you know of some other cool boats from movies. If so, just add them to the comments below. For now, check these out. In no particular order of preference:

1. The Q-Boat from the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough

What a sleek, powerful little boat. You can find out more about this boat and see it in action here.

2. The Boat from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

This is the boat that features in the great boat chase scene. You can watch it here.

You can see from the picture above that this pretty little boat is being cut in half by the propellers of a large ship.

Some trivia for you - This speedboat was built specially for the film. The back half of the boat was made from balsa wood and filled with explosives. No better way to make sure the boat is blown in half, Hollywood style!

3. The Fishing Boat from One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest

This one's for all of us who love the freedom of getting away for a fishing trip every so often. Also, a great film!

4. "African Queen" from the film The African Queen

A highly regarded film, made in 1951, starring the great Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn.

Some trivia - there were actually two 'Africa Queen' boats. One was filmed in the studio and one filmed on the River Nile. You can get a ride on the studio boat as a tourist on the Florida Keys. The 'real' African Queen was left to rot after filming, only to be found in 1985 with a tree growing through it. It's since been restored and remains in Africa.

5. "Nautilus” from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Such a crazy looking boat, it had to make the list!

6. The "Orca" fishing boat from Jaws

This boat went through a lot! It still enabled them to get that shark though. Brilliant film.

7. “U96” in Das Boot

Another boat that goes through a huge amount of wreckage. Check out this clip of the U96 in action and you'll see what I mean. Another great film.

8. The Mariner’s Boat from Waterworld

Perhaps not the best of films, but an interesting boat!

9. The Boat from Apocalypse Now

What a film! I may go and put the popcorn in the microwave now. Think it's getting close to that time where I put my feet up.

10. “Disco Volante” in the Bond film Thunderball

This is two boats in one! Enough said.

Though, for those interested, here's some trivia (from Wikipedia) -

"The real craft used in the film was a hydrofoil ferry, The Flying Fish, built by Rodriquez Cantieri Navali, who had built the first successful one at Freccia del Sole. The "cocoon" was built on set. It was purchased for the film for $500,000 and brought from Puerto Rico to Miami for refitting and refurbishment. The hydrofoil never sailed again after the filming. It was rented as a stationary houseboat, docked at a marina on Miami's MacArthur Causeway, until it sank at the dock in the early 1980s".

Other boats on our mind...

"But, but... no Titanic?!", I hear you cry. Well, for one, it's more of a ship than a boat. Also, you all know it so well already I didn't think it needed adding really.

This list also got me thinking about cool boats in TV shows and this one immediately came to mind. If you’ve any favourite boats from TV, let us know by commenting below. Maybe some time we could also look at the coolest boats on TV.
